A Card A Day

I am a new member of VAST. I recently starting painting a card a day as a good warm up and painting exercise. I haven't started listing them for sale yet on etsy as I am not sure how I should price them . Here is one of my favorites. It was done from a photo I took of a sunset on the beach in Maui during my one and only trip to Hawaii last year. The colors were incredible!

Longing, 3 x 3", acrylic on canvas

I am new to VAST and am really excited to be part of the team!

I am a painter, mainly acrylic, who took about 10 years off from painting when my children were babies. My youngest has recently started preschool, so I am painting again and trying to sell some of my work on Etsy. I am working mostly small format for now since my painting time is quite short and very fractured. I am enjoying looking at everyone's work!

Crows on a Wall

I haven't posted here for a while, have been working on this painting/collage. I'm having a solo show in May so it will be here until then, unless it sells; wouldn't THAT be nice.
It can be seen in my Etsy shop, Heronkate.

Elle Moss Photography...

This is my first VAST posting and I'm thrilled to be part of the team. My shop, Elle Moss Photography, features original, signed fine art photography that is taken by, and processed by me. They are mostly self portraits.
My work tends to be dark and surreal, but I thought I would share with you some of my more feminine, romantic pieces.

Calm Quiet by Erin Spencer

Calm Quiet

Calm Quiet . 10 x 10 . oil on cradled panel . purchase

Here's my most recent Rhode Island landscape painting. This one looks really similar to another painting I finished a couple of weeks ago, but it's not of the same place! This little state is full of these coves and inlets. After all, it is called the Ocean State:) This painting has lots of energy in the brushwork and it's really an easy one for me to look at sitting there on my easel. You can whisk this one away for yourself if you'd like, in my etsy shop.

Florals are Easy and other Fallacies...

Here it is, my first still life floral - ever.

It all started innocently enough. I bought myself a spring floral bouquet and a couple of hyacinths as a reward for enduring, yet another, dental appointment. With half of my face still frozen I could hardly wait to get these beauties home and into some water. Then when I had them all set up I thought "I just HAVE to paint them".

So the next day when the freezing had well worn off and the pain from the needle that did the freezing was really apparent I decided to start the still life to take my mind off of the pain. I thought I'd be done in a few hours.

I had to rearrange my living room/studio, who am I kidding, it's a studio with minimal living room. The photo above was after about 8 hours I think. You can see the floral still life ontop of my much covetted red Dukabhor table that I have moved with me 5 times since I got it. I love that table.

At a certain point I was beginning to stress a bit then I looked behind me and saw this. Yeah, my cat sure wasn't stressing AT ALL. She had complete confidence in my ability. My ability to feed her that is. She's right about that :)

This gives you an idea of the color pallette I was working with. I ended up using another tray for glazes.

All in all the painting took about 15 hours. It was sealed with two glazes of sealer then varnished. The image continues around the edges so one doesn't have to frame it if they don't want to.

I now have even more respect for floral artists. It ain't as easy as it looks after all but it was well worth the lesson.

BIRDS IN PARADISE

"Birds In Paradise” is an original oil that features two beautiful tropical Bird Of Paradise, and has been painted with the effect of being matted in a sage green silk-like design. Canvas is painted on all edges, so no need for a frame, if you don’t want one.

It can also be purchased framed in solid koa.

The inspiration for this painting was my beautiful Bird Of Paradise plant that I have had growing in my garden for over 13 years. To me, the Bird Of Paradise is one of the most beautiful of all the tropicals. I am lucky enough to be able to grow them in my yard here in Hawaii, and their bright vibrant colors always bring a smile to my face. They are truly fascinating.

Enjoying Nature

I am new to VAST and delighted to be among the company of so many wonderfully talented artists.  Today I am happy to share with you one of my illustrations titled "Enjoying Nature".  The inspiration for this piece came from a visit to The Sooke Pot Holes on a trip to Vancouver BC with our eldest granddaughter when she was considerably younger.  This is her favorite of all of my drawings.

Crow Skull Study

Crow Skull Study II

An original watercolor by Helen Klebesadel

I love crows. They are the truth-speakers. I think of them as the Cassandras (the harsh voices that carry truths no one wants to know). A part of me is a crow. In my deepest places I know my affinity is attached to the wisdom and knowledge I have gained in my maturity from lived experience, especially from the mistakes of inaction. They represent my belief that it is important to speak the truth as you see it even, and especially, when no one wants to hear it.
Knowing my fascination with all things raven and crow I am often gifted with crow and raven associated items by my community. This painting is of a lovely crow skull given to me
in an beautiful ribbon bound box by my friend Math.

Dublin Boys, c. 1860

Book Club Fantasy Art

This little painting is one that I worked on while at a science fiction and fantasy literature convention. The things that go on in life always seem to reflect in some way in the art. It could be a punny friend, a scene in a book, something on the news, or something happening with family. But so often a work of art can show a small little glimpse into the life of the artist.
Most of my dragons remind me of my teenage son, and the little fairy cats are often inspired by my daughter, but on occasion, it is the other way around. And it can be little every day things that inspire little charming pictures. A teenage boy tearing into a piece of pizza or a little girl's fascination with bugs, reptiles and wildlife.

BIRDS OF ZEN original art painting Lovely birds perched on a limb

If the world was made of metal it would be a shiny place, until drops of water began to invade it's pristine armor. From shiny steal to multi hues or red, orange, and hints of blue until it's eaten away into lovely russet. Copper would lend it's self to multi hues of green and blues until it is eaten away to turn a lovely powdery teal.

In this series ZEN BIRDS I have a depicted a eroded world of of beauty where once it would have been viewed as a world of dying. I see life in it's ever changing evolutions. From seed of the tree, from egg of the bird, ore to creation metal. What man creates nature erodes leaving in it's wake a beautiful impression of color.

ZEN BIRDS honors nature.

COLORS OF THE PACIFIC

This is one of my original palette knife oil paintings, titled
"Colors Of The Pacific"

What could be better than a brilliant colorful sky overlooking gorgeous turquoise waters and a palm tree lined shore. With the world famous landmark of Hawaii, Diamond Head, as your backdrop, you won’t ever want to go back home!

I love the texture and depth that you can achieve with a palette knife. It adds another dimension that is difficult to accomplish with a paint brush.
