STORM WATCHER

"Storm Watcher" is a small original ACEO of a photo we took while driving through the Grand Teton National Park. A big black raven sits stoically atop an old fence post watching the ever darkening sky move in above the Grand Teton range. He has seen this many times, and knows that rain will soon be upon him, but it won’t last for long.

"Storm Watcher" is available in my Etsy Shop.

Please check out my Grand Teton Adventure:

Still being influence by Kauai – new ACEO’s

Hawaiian Hibiscus ACEO copy© M Pruitt 2009

I can’t help it… the island got into my blood. I want to move there and just keep soaking in that healthful island living!

Well, still being there in heart has drawn paintings out of me, inspired by the beauty there. I completed these ACEO’s recently – all of which are for sale in my Etsy shop (or click the picture)

I completely fell in love with Plumeria’s on Kauai! They were blooming everywhere and they come in such a variety of colors! Their fragrance is intoxicating. Of of these has some of the native symbols I discovered on the island along with pen work in the background. The other is a Plumeria bud caught by my husband on camera in the early morning as it opened.

Thank you for visiting our VAST blog. I hope you’ll stop by my shop, The Creators Palette, to see all of my original watercolors including these ACEO’s!

 What’s an ACEO you ask?

Well here is what I am sharing with my customers at my art fairs this summer:

Artist Trading Cards (or ATCs) are miniature works of art created on 2 ½ X 3 ½ inch or 64 X 89 mm card, small enough to fit inside standard card-collector pockets, sleeves or sheets. Cards are produced in various media, including dry media (pencils, pens, markers, etc), wet media (watercolor, acrylic paints, etc), paper media (in the form of collage, papercuts, found objects, etc). The cards are traded or exchanged between artists.

ATC’s have been traded amongst artists for years. Even famous artists like Renoir and Monet would take ATC’s and trade them with other artists at the great art exhibits in Europe.

ACEO’s (Art Cards, Editions and Originals) are an offshoot of Artist Trading Cards. In the 1990’s, artists found that non-artists also wanted to collect these miniature pieces of art – and so the name was changed to identify that they were being sold and ACEO’s were born.

ACEO’s are now highly collectible. They can sell for up to $700, and yet, they are most often a wonderfully affordable way to own an original art piece from your favorite artist.

ACEO’s can be displayed as trading cards, on miniature easels, or even matted and framed.

Watercolor ACEO - Country Scene

I wrote on my blog (www.bearhollowcreations.blogspot.com ) the background to this little ACEO and about how cows don't like to have their picture taken. (Some of my country friends would say have their picture made.)

http://bearhollowcreations.blogspot.com/2009/08/cows-dont-like-their-picture-taken.html

Anyway, this ACEO is watercolor on 140 lb. cold press paper and is mounted on a playing card to make it extra sturdy.

This little original painting is the perfect gift for your friend who lives in the country or for those who wish they could get out of the big city for a while for some fresh air.

It's titled "Hickory Point at Sunset" because just before sunset is when the cows come down the hill to eat closer to my house.

Under The Sea

UNDER THE SEA lives a beautiful maiden exsquisite in her splendor. No other creature under the sea has seen such a thing as she. What is this we see ? We have searched for gills, and have found none. What are those two elongated apertures that end in fins? What can that be atop her form moving like weeds of the sea? Some say she is a creature from above, yet we have never seen her leave the sea. Others say she is a creature that descends from the being of time , neither fish nor human kind, but the evolution of both sea and earth.

Cthulhushi and Punk Dragon Drawings

I seem to be focused on Dragons these days. Cthulhushi might be one of the strangest things my muse led me to create. It all started with me thinking more about packing bento style lunches more with the kids starting back to school. Then you have the boy's fascination with dragons and my husband's love of Lovecraft (and maybe a few episodes of Calls 4 Cthulhu that dh's old college room mate creates) and my magpie muse put this image in my head.

And next we have my Punk Dragon. The sketch for this was done at a friend's house. He toddler turned around and gave me this snarling glare that made me giggle. It didn't help that last Halloween we dressed her up as a little punk baby complete with pink hair, chains on her jacket and a Ramones T-shirt. So a a toddler with attitude was the inspiration for my punk dragon ink drawing that you see here.

Hawaiian Honeysuckle Love

A beautiful pair of Hawaiian Amakihi enjoy a meal together among the dazzling nectar-filled flowers of the tropics.

"Hawaiian Honeysuckle Love"
is an 11 x 14 original oil painting, and is available in my
Etsy shop.

The Amakihi is a Hawaiian Honeycreeper. There are said to be four different sub-species, depending on location. The Kauai, Hawaii, Oahu, and Maui Amakihi, each with subtle differences. Often seen in small flocks, most common in native forests above 2,000 ft. The male is a brilliant yellow green, while the female is a darker olive green. They can usually be found collecting sweet nectar from the flowers of the forest.

Summer in the Upstate

Floating somewhere between the Adirondacks and the Catskills, I get to see many mountain views on my drives to work. Sometimes there's a mass of green forest and sometimes I get that purply tinge that seems to exist amidst this summer haze. Here's to summertime in the mountains! Enjoy and maybe I'll see you in Troy! www.aliherrmann.com

Black and White Watercolor on Canvas

I took workshop recently, and one of the paintings I began working on was a sunset over water with a boat in the water.

As we learned composition rules, we were required to create tonal pencil drawings of our painting before starting.

During the workshop, I only got as far as the drawing and when I got home, my daughter saw it and begged me to paint it in black and white.

I debated the idea for a while, but finally gave in and this was the product. She’s so in love with this painting it’s hard to put it up for sale – but I didn’t name it after her “Ellen’s Boat”.

It’s painted completely with Payne’s Grey – which is not completely black and actually has a bit of a bluish tint to it when watered down.

I used YES canvas and painted the sides so it can be hung just as it is, or it can be framed. I think it would look fantastic in a floating frame!!

Let me know what you think of this monochrome – black and white watercolor.

Mini Art!

I have been working on some time-consuming off-etsy projects this last month or so, and will be for the next few weeks too.

So, as a break from my other work, and to try and keep my shop updated with something new, I've been working on these little mini canvases - they're great fun to do and very low commitment!

This one is called "Coral Romance"and measures just 2.75” X 2.75" X 0.4" (7 x 7 x 1 cm.) approx. It's now listed in my etsy shop.
