Large Floral Still Life Watercolor

This is my newest painting - a still life painted from a vase of flowers sitting right in front of me!

I've been pretty ill the last 2 months. I struggle with a chronic illness and had almost 2 mos of stomach pain and nausea. Some friends came by with these flowers to cheer me up. For some reason, I just wanted to paint BIG... so I pulled out my 18"x24" rough press block and started painting them from life. What a fun experience!!!

My only reget, is that we have only had rain since I finished it and so far, I just can not get a good picture of the yellow flower. But the sun will shine again, and then I can update my Etsy listing. It is much more varied in color and depth than this picture shows.

I really love the movement and color in the background - bringing a feel of impressionism to this watercolor painting. The rough press paper also allows many of my granulating pigments to bring great texture to this painting.

Spring Daffodil

Yesterday my first daffodil opened ! It looked so cold and lonely out there so I brought it in and painted it. I'm looking right into the center of the trumpet so The painting is called "Straight On Daffodil. Painted on a 12 x 12 inch stretched canvas with 1 1/2 inch sides. The sides are painted like the image; there's no need to frame this piece. Wired and ready to hang. Bring spring into your home with this painting! See it in my Etsy shop.

HOME IN THE HILLS by Thom Evans

Home In The Hills  A 24x18 inch acrylic painting on canvas

Inspired by the beauty and colors of the Texas Hill Country. Seeing the houses as the cling to the sides of the hills

This painting is a new effort in painting for me. It comes from a collaboration in style with a favorite artist and friend of mine, Jack Ramsey. Jack’s influence comes from his ability to critique. His experience comes from the 40’s and 50’s, running with a bunch of  New York artists like de Kooning, Pollock and others. 

Jack and I both agree that true abstract is out. We look for art with more substance and drama. On one of our friday get-togethers, we came to the conclusion that we were working on what we call Beyond Abstraction. This is saying that we want our work to express substance coming out of an abstract form, to include visually recognized images with motion. 

Many canvases have come and gone for this goal, but I feel that I am near the top of the hill. I will always try. It’s the trying that drives me.

I just finished my newest painting, the second in my poppy series. This one features a focused down view of a pink oriental poppy emphasizing it's sunlit glow with soft lilacs, pinks, and periwinkle hues.

The Explorer - Original Frog ACEO

I began working in pen and ink two years ago. I enjoy the stark contrast I can create when I add color to the subject of the drawing but leave the rest in the black lines of pen.

Frogs are one of my more favorite subjects for this medium. This little guy made me think of an explorer scaling a mountain side, only here it's a giant leaf.

New Acrylic Painting; "Heart of a Daffodil"

I just finished the first of my series featuring daffodils.  The focus of this series will range from very recognizable representations of daffodils to more abstracted pieces like this one.  My goal with this piece was to render the color relationships between the salmon pinks, creams and soft yellows of the center with the pure papery whites of the outer petals.  For more infomation check out the listing in my Etsy shop.

Happy Valentine's Day!

I made this little mixed media collage in the name of LOVE...hence it's name, AMORE!

Looking into my bag of treasures and found these very old pieces of photographs that depicted red roses on them. They were scraps from a photo class I took while in college; just bad prints that my friend didn't want and she was so nice as to let me keep them. So, this roses where just right as focal point for this piece.

I glued the ripped photographs into a piece of watercolor paper measuring 8.5"h x 10.5"w. I added pieces of hand-made paper and a ripped piece from a pastel drawing. I also added a few pieces of paper here and there from different sources, to add a complementary color and texture. To finish my piece I wrote the word AMORE on silk paper, using India ink in a golden yellow and in red. Then, I ripped the borders by hand and glued the words down around my piece, in a way that you can't read the whole word at once.... Like love, it needs a little effort from both sides to be complete! Enjoy!
