"City Block #2" by Jenna Newton

City Block #2 2009
20" x 24" oil on canvas

I just completed this new painting of a city block, it is another piece in my ongoing series of urban dwellings. 3 modern homes squeezed together on a tiny bit of street. I used so much color in this painting, it's really vibrant and intense.

Moon Three Trees and One Leaf Paper Collage (ACEO)

When I make envelopes to store my ACEOs, I have scraps of cardstock leftover. Hmmm, what to do? I hate throwing good scraps away! So these paper pieces were born.

This ACEO is made from layered cardstock sewn and adhered to 140lb watercolor paper for stability. It is an original small art collage--featuring a slightly abstract scene of moon, three threes and one leaf.

ACEO (Art Cards, Editions and Originals)
2.5 inches wide by 3.5 inches long
6.4 centimeters wide by 8.9 centimeters long

More ACEOs, fabric collages and contemporary art quilted wall-hangings may be found in my shop.

Bold Adventure! original modern acrylic impressionism painting on canvas

I've decided that I am bored, so I'm experimenting with some bolder colors. I'm hoping to start woking in some colors that I don't usually use, in places that I wouldn't have thought to use them in before. This is the first offering in that vein.

Winter Flowers

Naming pictures is so hard for me. But here is my latest, very highly textural done in subdued pastel acrylic paint. It is a 12 x 12 in gallery wrapped canvas.

Through the Forest Window Fabric Collage (ACEO)

I've found myself returning to a theme of inside and outside at the same time...Looking through windows to the outside from the inside...and so this ACEO reflects that as well (subtly, but it's there). Original small art fabric collage (ACEO) made from recycled/repurposed fabrics and cotton thread adhered and sewn to 140lb watercolor paper.

New Enchanted Garden 24x30 Original Painting

Newest painting just added to the Enchanted Garden Series of paintings. This is a larger piece measuring 24x30 on thick 1.8 inch deep gallery-wrapped canvas. Very bright and colorful. A painting that is sure to brighten any wall and bring a smile to those who see it.

Visit my etsy shop for more enchanted garden paintings, prints, gift items and more.

New Offerings

I've been going crazy with painting lately. My arms have been covered in paint, often in red paint, making me look like some kind of an escapee from the set of 28 Days Later or somesuch.

Here are some of my most recent offerings to ye olde Gods of Internet, all of which are available in my etsy store.

I am now off to make my studio even more of a mess, just to make completely sure that if I don't get my security deposit back on the house I'm renting, it'll be worth it.

Middle Earth

...
I loved the stories that Tolkien weaved as a child.
Can't help noticing how much it looks like a Shire from Middle Earth.

How to create depth in landscapes paintings!

How to make landscapes paintings have depth!

I think you are asking the wrong question. When I first started painting, I had that kind of mind set. It is the way most people are taught. The way that I learned, was to have your background colors paler, and to use a blue, gray, or a purple. Muted these colors will recede. Then, as you come forward in the painting you add more intensity to the colors, and add more detail. Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t totally discarded this principle. The problem with most beginners is that they are afraid of dark values (dark colors). When a beginning artist paints in this manner, they tend to end up with a pale and washed out painting. I was a beginner once. I remember not being able to paint green trees. I would start painting the leaves with a green, after all trees look green. Grass is also green, so I would paint the grass a different green. Before you know it, the whole painting was green and totally hideous, because there weren’t any darks.
I have an old friend who doesn’t know anything about art. Years ago, when I wasn’t yet making a living with my paintings, I showed him some of my latest paintings. He said , “They are nice, but why would I want them“. That is the question you should be asking yourself. What can I do to this painting to make somebody want it? Drama! You need drama, not depth. You need the painting to pop. You do this with dark against light. Without a dark, dark, the light isn’t very bright. The brighter you want the light to be, the darker you have to make the dark. If you concentrate on lights against darks, I promise you, your paintings will have depth. You are going to have to use your imagination here. First, think of a painting as a group of objects or planes. Imagine cutting each object or plane out ,and then stacking them from front to back, to make a 3D image. In the back you have the sky, then the clouds on top of the sky. then the distant mountain, the, distant yellow field, the closer green field, etc. Now lets go from the back to the front, and paint this painting in layers of light against dark.

New Welcome Spring Tree Horizon Painting by Kristen Stein

A new spring-themed tree painting. Richly-hued with an antiqued, weathered texture, these colorful trees welcome spring with their touches of blues and orange and hits of white. The colorful and ethereal background of yellows, ivory and celery green give the feeling of a crisp cool Spring Day.

New large 40x30 abstract tree landscape painting. Rich, rustic and textured mixed media painting. Painted on thick 1.8 inch deep stretched canvas. Green Tomatoes

This is a painting that isn't featured in my Etsy shop, but remains one of my favorites. I created it one summer, inspired by a huge bowl of beautiful green tomatoes. It was in a 4 person exhibit at the Colfax Cultural Center in South Bend, IN when I lived there from 2001-2004. You can find reference to it on my painting website, the press page in an article by Julie Coppens of the South Bend Tribune. Oil on canvas, 50"x40".

Encaustic Painting

I love working in encaustics, though I don't do it very often. Encaustic paintings are made using pigments that are mixed with wax, melted, and painted onto the substrate, in this case, a piece of plywood which I specially prepared for this kind of art work. The wax lends itself to mixed media work, as it is very easy to add all kinds of materials to the wax, which holds it firmly within the compostion. The collage elements in this particular piec are made from painted lutradur, which is an non woven polyester material, whilst the paints themselves come from the US and are of a very high quality.

This particular piece is called ' Traces'. One of the themes I come back to repeatedly is that of marks and mark making. I'm fascinated by the kind of natural marks that you find in pieces of stone and other natural surfaces. I wonder whether they have meaning; this is an image inspired a stone I saw recently. We read those marks as letters; but are they really, or are they simply random marks? We'll probably never know, but that doesn't stop us from speculating, or from enjoying the painting. You can find it here in my Etsy shop, if you would like to see more detailed images. It would make an interesting talking point in a small room, or a feature amongst a collection of small to medium sized paintings. It features gentle colours and lots of interesting and varied textures and layers of imagery.

Ladybug Fabric Collage (ACEO)
