Adventure in the Making - Original Oil Painting by Erin Spencer

Adventure in the Making / 6 x 8 / oil on panel

Just finished this painting today. Check it out!

I'm a new member of the VAST team & presently exploring pen & ink

First post! Yippie!

I'll introduce myself by saying that I work in a number of mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture (free standing and wall pieces), digital arts, ceramic wheel thrown pottery, graphic arts and a little in costume-making and other fiber arts. It all comes from being an art teacher (K - 12) where I was expected to teach everything art (I have a bachelors in studio art and a masters in art education). I am now a full time working artist.

I'll be keeping it simple & following the rules and only posting my wall art on this site.

The above drawings are my latest. Pen & ink on bristol board. I am using sepia colored ink.

I've generally been making small pieces this summer that don't require much fuss. These are OSWOAs. I refuse to give into air conditioning even though it's been in the nineties all summer... and small pieces means I can transport my works-in-progress to a lake or cool spot under a tree, work on a small board, not worry if I screw it up (because they're not huge projects that take months or weeks).

Now that the weather is cooler, I'm onto some more mega projects.

Still Life with Grapes

"Still Life with Grapes"
3 x 5", acrylic on canvas

I've been sort of in a still life state of mind lately. The grapes made me think of harvest and a kind of fall mood, so I couldn't resist making this little painting. At only 3 x 5 inches, it is definitely small format art! Listing is here.

Fanciful Doodle

I got back from a trip to the coast and after recovering from salt air and sun decided to sit down in front of the TV and see where my pen would take me.  It was just supposed to be nothing much but once I had finished I thought it was kind of fun and decided to share it.

"Fanciful Doodle"

Happy Day all!

Cupcakes!

This is a commission canvas that I've recently finished - it was done as a birthday gift.

The canvas measures 12 x 12 x 1.5" and was created with acrylic paints, papers and ephemera. I luckily had some paper that was the exact colour of the wall it's going to go on!

You can see more of my work (or commission your own canvas!) in my etsy shop.

Thinking Fall

The coolness of the last few days have me thinking about autumn. Fall in New England is my favorite time of year! Couldn't resist doing a little ACEO with an autumn theme:

SUMMER BY Alexandra Kopp

"SUMMER" is a recent abstract collage painting I did. I started with a watercolor painting (that wasn't working) . I then started layering with decorative paper, tissue paper, acrylic paints, oils and finally gold metallic paint. I love the texture and colors.

This and other works can be seen at my Etsy shop AlexandrasStudio.com

Three new listings!

Three new little canvases from me - each one is an original acrylic painting on canvas, 5x5" square and x1.5" deep. I love the tones of these together - I've used a copper metallic paint for the swirly abstract one which catches the light a little :)

These are now newly available in my etsy shop.

Making Prints from my Cards

In recent years, many people have told me that they buy my greeting cards to frame. A few weeks ago one of my shopkeepers asked me if I could pretty please begin making reproduction prints to sell in his shop - so I began exploring this yesterday.

I spent the day formatting several of my quotation card designs to fit into an 11x14 matted frame. Things were going OK until my brandy new Epson printer went on the fritz and refused to load the paper (me pulling my hair and dancing around, squeeling expletives.) I've called and emailed Epson to no conclusion so now I'm thinking of just having them printed by someone else. Once I get this all figured out, I will add them to the products I sell on Etsy and elsewhere.

I must say, they do look very nice.

To see the cards these were made from, visit my Etsy shop at www.EmerlyeArts.etsy.com.

Acrylic Painting: "Mocha Mama" or "Coffee in the Garden"

This is an original 12" x 16" painting whose inspiration began with Matisse's "Madame Matisse" also known as the "Woman with the Green Stripe" with the colors dramatically exaggerated with limes, blues and vermilions. In addition, I've given her a cup of java just in case the colors aren't enough to wake her......
For infomation, check her out at my Etsy shop.
Thanks for looking!

Bookish Love - Hand Cut Kirigami Mandala

This large kirigami mandala is a commissioned piece for a couple who reads a lot. The flowers emerging from the books represent the flowering of knowledge. The flames around the heart are for passion. The butterflies signify the transformative nature of learning and of marriage.

This mandala was commissioned and sold on Etsy. You can find similar work in my shop or commission one for a special occasion.

My latest illustration was inspired by a photo taken by John A. Anderson of "Fool Bull" in or around 1900, (Tatanko Witko 1844 - 1909).  Fool Bull was a medicine man among the Brule Sioux.  I was especially taken by his "Shield of Many Feathers" and the following drawing is the result of what I call my Fool Bull inspiration ...

"Inspired By Fool Bull and His Shield of Many Feathers"

I am not a portrait artist, so this is not a factual depiction of "Fool Bull".  But, he seems to be a man who has inspired many an artist, myself among them.

Thank you for taking the time to look.

Bluebirds Love Sumac

Bluebirds Love Sumac
Watercolor, 22 x 30

Bluebirds are a wonderful success story of citizen efforts to restore a declining species. Once endangered, through concerted efforts (and lots of bluebird houses in the yards of volunteers) the bluebirds have been brought back from a 70 % decline. One of their favored foods in the wild foods is sumac, another of my favorite wild shrubs.

You can see this work in my Etsy Shop or learn more about my painting, teaching, and career development experiences on my blog.

Pink Rose

An original acrylic painting on a chunky box canvas, a pink rose on a deep chocolate background. I love these colours together!

This canvas is 5” X 5" X 1.5" approx. and can be found in my etsy shop.
