Happy New Year!
I'm not sure if this is New Year related but it kind of represents the idea of a new beginning, new ideas, growth...I think! Hope everyone has a lovely, creative and productive 2010!

New Oil Painting- Hems & Haws
While I was painting my last few oil paintings, I had this canvas on the side of my easel as a way to work out the random ideas in my head and also as a way to use up the excess paint on my palette. I really hate to be wasteful with paint (it costs so much!) so in an effort to squeeze every cent of worth out of my paint, I usually create something that's a bit of a departure. And quite freeing, too!Occasionally when I paint, I try to think about how the piece will fit in with the body of work that I've already created. I think about it all being linear and telling a story together. This is fine, but sometimes I think the work will find a way to fit itself in just from the sheer virtue of being from the same artist. This may not always be the way that things work out, but it's ok to open yourself up to experimentation and see where that goes. Right? :)

A PERFECT DAY IN OPUNOHU BAY

“A Perfect Day In Opunohu Bay”
On the beautiful island of Moorea, Tahiti, lies Opunohu Bay. It’s gorgeous scenery attracts many visitors to it’s calm clear waters and breathtaking Mount Mouaroa (also known as the Bali Hai of the Pacific), soaring up into the clouds above. It is here that Captain Cook actually anchored in 1769 and where the movie "The Bounty" was filmed.
Opunohu is the Tahitians' favorite bay because it is less populated, and has small secluded beaches.

TIME IN A BOTTLE ABSTRACT ART YOGA STYLE FEEL THE ZEN

In art never say what what you created let the viewer tell you what they see.
lesson learned here. This series was created out of a feeling of being trapped. I created this abstract series depicting figure in bottles, thinking I saw them as being all BOTTLE UP. My viewers saw figures in yoga poses, others saw figures in vessels like the Greek art.My motto ask what they see before I explain my muse.

The Secret
Hello everyone! I have been doing some surreal and slightly abstract art as we move into winter, since I love the winter palette of colors. I wanted to contrast icy and warm shades in this piece to create a feeling of solitude and solace. This is an 8 x 10 acrylic painting on stretched canvas and is available along with many other items in my shop:

WAIMANALO BLUES

"Waimanalo Blues"
Traveling along the coast road from Kailua to Hawaii Kai, you must pass through the
sleepy little town of Waimanalo. Only 3 miles long, it takes you to a different, more "laid-back" way of life in Hawaii. Waimanalo has pristine sandy beaches along the entire stretch on one side of the road, and on most days, the water is the most beautiful shades of turquoise and aqua blues imaginable. This is a view looking towards the Makai Pier. In the distance, the Mapakuu Lighthouse can be seen perched up on the cliff.

Morphans In Flight Behold Peridot

Morphans In Flight Behold Peridot
Morphans here have their eye upon this periodot ring and it's warming olivine qualities. Behold oh sweet peridot. I used a heavy textile pattern (much like tweed and crosshatch) in the background, warm gold berries in contrast with the white berries and birds n' tracks

My new acrylic painting- Apricot Beauty.....
In my obsession of painting flowers, I fluctuate between tulips and zinnias being my favorites. I'm now back to tulips- I ADORE parrot tulips, they are so sensual with their lines, shapes and colors....I don't think I'll ever tire of painting them!
Here's my newest- just finished yesterday.

Winter and first snow

First Snow, oil on canvas panel 9″x12″ 2009.
From my blog; Our first snow and one of my favorite seasons. It’s cold outside! Time for fleece, hot chocolate and indoor painting. My newest painting, inspired by the weekend’s weather. Don't forget to visit my Etsy shop for new work.
Original watercolour and ink painting of a Christmas Angel:

I tried out a few techniques for this painting -
1. I started with the sky, painting a mixture of pinks and purples in a wash of watercolour over the whole sky, leaving a curved shape at the bottom white, for the snowy hill. Into the sky I sprinkled salt, to give the snowy effect - as the paint dries the salt absorbs the paint wherever it's sprinkled, leaving an interesting speckled texture.
2. Using a very thinned down wash of lilac/purple I added some shadowy textures to the snowy hill.
3. I painted in the trunk and branches of the trees using some white acrylic. I used this quite thickly, so that the sky didn't show through.
4. Using a selection of coloured fine line pens I drew the angel across the sky. I used blues to outline her dress and yellow and oranges for her hair, halo, wings and trumpet.
5. I used more white acrylic to highlight areas of the angel, and make her stand out from the background. You can still see some of the original pink speckly sky in areas of her dress. I also added touches of yellow watercolour to the trumpet and parts of her wings.
6. The final step brought the whole painting to life - before this the sky was speckled pink all over and the angel and trees weren't standing out enough. I mixed up a large quantity of dilute midnight blue watercolour and painted a wash over the whole sky, being careful to paint round the edges of the angel, and to leave space round the branches of the trees.
I've ordered some Christmas cards using this design, can't wait to see how they turn out!

Santa's Workshop

In Keeping with the season, here's one of my latest prints. The original painting was a commission, painted in acrylic on a 24x36" stretched canvas. It took 2 months to complete and I began to think it was the painting that would never end. The composition was tricky because while I wanted Mr. & Mrs. Santa to be the focal point, I wanted to indicate that they were the "calm" in the midst of the busy workshop.

This is my latest original mixed media canvas. I have used nine little wooden hearts in this piece, which stand up a little from the canvas surface to give a slightly 3D look.
The canvas is painted in acrylics, and I've also used various collaged papers (including paper recycled from my old artwork and some vintage newsprint).
Some of the hearts are topped with little red buttons.
The canvas measures 5 x 5 x 1.5" and is for sale in my etsy shop.
