I've used all sorts of ephemera in this piece - acrylic paints, as well as collaged paper, lace, ribbon, buttons, and a little wooden key.
The four hearts are made of wood, and are a little raised from the canvas, giving a slightly 3D effect.
The canvas measures 8” X 8" X 0.6" approx (20 x 20 x 3.75 cm approx.) and you can see it in all it's glory here.
SUMMER GARDEN SERIES MOLTEN WAX ON HARDBOARD

The beauty of the earth comes from the warmth of the sun touching upon the seedling's of last year.
A new birth opens up with tender green stalks, pushing forth from the brown womb which held it for two seasons.
Rising up stronger from the nutrients of the sun and earth, it beings to grow a multi colored crown of glory.
Summmer garden free and wild for me too look upon your beauty and to breath your fragrance upon the wind. Memories of the past coming rushing forth, I must pick from your beauty to place upon the seedlings of my birth.

The Paper Cuts Book is Printed!

This morning when I collected my mail, I discovered the long-awaited Paper Cuts book in my box. To my surprise, one of my kirigami keepsake cards is on the cover! The book includes a basic explanation of different kinds of papercutting and many examples of projects you can make. Two of my items are presented: the kirigami card and a kirigami mandala. I chose very simple designs to present because the kind of complex work I do would be too difficult for most beginning papercutters. Also, kirigami involves cutting through many layers of paper, which is much more difficult than cutting through single sheets, which is the case for most paper cutting methods, such as scherenschnitte. Shown above is the book cover. You can find this oversized paperback on Amazon.com.
In case you are not familiar with my work, here is an example of my most recent mandala:

Latest Paintings
This started out as a quick 'Shirley Trevena' style practice painting. It went a bit wrong in the middle so I thought I'd try adding some collage bits to it. I tried to keep it simple by only using some sheet music strips, some blue Japanese patterned paper and the central sunflower which is a piece of paper I painted yellow and then used pen and watercolour to add detail.
I'm not sure if it's finished yet.

Water Lily
This is another attempt to get the lose and expressive 'Shirley Trevena' style. It was a very late entry for the Lotus watercolour challenge from Lorus Maver's great photo: Lotus Challenge Photo. There were so many beautiful paintings from this photo, by the talented Flickr group, that I had to give it a try. All of the versions can be seen in the group's pool here: Lotus Challenge entries
The 'Watercolourist, Painting with Light' group has been running challenges like this for a year now but this is the first one I've taken part in. Hopefully I can start catching up with the others from now on!

This painting is predominantly watercolour, but I've also used a bit of salt and some coloured pencil in places. And quite a bit of wax candle for the sparkly highlights on the water and lily pads.
Little blue jug
Again, I'm trying to work on still lives in a Trevena style. I bought this great little jug and bowl in a charity shop recently and I'll probably be using them in many more still lives to come. I've used water-soluble pencils in the background and for some of the details of the bottle. I used a wax candle for the pattern on the bowl - not ideal, but I've run out of masking fluid. I've also used a bit of the pencil sanding technique in places - i.e rubbing watersoluble pencils on sand paper over wet paint, it gives a great speckly texture.

Birds Reflected - Kirigami Mandala
Here is one of two mandalas I cut last night, each about a 3/4 movie creation. My daughter likes this one so much she thinks I should frame it instead of laminating it to hang. If so, then it will be in a 10 inch frame instead of the 12 inch frames my larger mandalas are in. This is an 8 inch cutting, although it is a bit more elaborate and complex. The outer edge is folded four times (8 layers.) I then opened it to create the birds in the center, which are folded only twice (4 layers.)
