Astonishing! That's how Witherle describes his first glimpse of a pileated woodpecker...just one of Witherle's favorite sights and sounds in the Maine woods...along with the musky smell of fir and spruce and moss...white tailed deer...the whisper of wind in the trees...Witherle will tell you...it never gets old...
