Spring Fever

I often join in challenges on a well-known art forum, especially challenges which will help me to learn something new! Last month the challenge was to paint or draw a floral completely from life, photographic references were not allowed at all. In a moment of madness I chose a bunch of magenta tulips to work from!

Now I love tulips, but they have a habit not shared by any other cut flower - they continue growing, and moving, after they have been cut and put in a vase! They were a nightmare, by the time I had an outline on paper the view I had drawn had disappeared. I persevered, drawing three tulips, various leaves, and the vase, then adding watercolours until the flowers were done and I could enjoy inventing the background.

I learned alot - the main thing being never underestimate the ability of flowers to cause you problems!

You can find this painting in my etsy shop now.
